Baby-led weaning (BLW) is an approach to introducing solid foods that allows babies to self-feed from the start. This method encourages independence and helps develop fine motor skills.
What is Baby-Led Weaning?
Unlike traditional weaning with purees, BLW involves offering finger foods that babies can pick up and eat themselves. This approach promotes self-regulation and helps babies learn to chew before they swallow.
Getting Started with BLW
Before starting BLW, ensure your baby:
- Can sit up unassisted
- Has lost the tongue-thrust reflex
- Shows interest in food
- Can pick up objects and bring them to their mouth
First Foods for BLW
Great starter foods include:
- Soft cooked vegetables (broccoli, sweet potato, carrots)
- Ripe fruits (banana, avocado, pear)
- Well-cooked pasta shapes
- Strips of toast
- Soft cooked meat or fish
